Document Type: General Handbook for Value Chain Research
[93] Last Modified: Jul 11, 2008 7:05 AM
The handbook is a good introduction to value chain analysis, providing an overview of the approach followed by on-depth profiles of different tools and frameworks that can be useful to value chain assessments. Rather than offering a definitive approach to the analysis, the guide highlights how to pick and choose among the different tools and frameworks provided depending on the goals of the value chain program and the target group. The guide is most useful for experienced practitioners to the approach—since it does not outline what a definitive assessment should include—but it would also be appropriate for novices looking for examples of specific tools once they have some grounding in the assessment process.

This guide should be used as a tool to conduct semi-structured interviews, rather than given to individuals to fill out on their own. In many situations it is desirable to adapt the interview guides to the specific type of market participant being interviewed (i.e., producer, wholesaler, importer, etc)

For others, the ideas presented will be new. Either way, we hope that this part of the manual will help you to put your research into context. Part II of the manual aims to give you the tools you will need to carry out a value chain study. Part III of the manual is about using your research to make an impact. An appendix with a brief treatment of the most commonly used methods is provided as well as a reference list that includes a number of research methods texts.
