This document presents the “Learner’s Notes” that accompany a distance learning course on Market Assessment and Analysis. The course illustrates how markets operate and how they relate to and affect food security and vulnerable households. It describes market components and how they function and introduces some of the methods and indicators used to assess markets for improving food security analysis. Patricia Bonnard, the Senior Market and Trade Advisor for FEWS NET, developed this course for FAO. It is one component of a larger module on Food Security Information for Action.

This manual is for trainers, agencies and groups who encourage the development of micro and small-scale enterprises (MSEs). The manual describes a three-day course that takes entrepreneurs through the steps of understanding market demand, developing innovative products, and surveying their local market to assess the potential of the new products. This manual is for local trainers by offering RMA at below-market rates. It is suggested, therefore, that agencies consider employing professional trainers (or use their own staff) to train local trainers. Thereafter, the agency can consider subsidizing the cost of the training for trainees who are especially disadvantaged or for entrepreneurs who are just starting up their businesses.

This manual is for people who own and operate micro and small businesses. This manual will help the small business owner, conduct market research on its own. Ideally, business owners will use this manual while you undergo three days of training in Rapid Market Appraisal (RMA) with about 10 to 15 other entrepreneurs. But the manual is designed so that the business owner can follow the course without the class just the same if there is no opportunity to conduct class.
